From the boozing, brawling, 62-hour liberties to the fighting and dying in combat, this classic narrative tells what it was really like to be a Marine in the Pacific of WW II. Helmet for My Pillow is an interesting read, especially if you watched the HBO mini-series, "Pacific." The book adds many details about the author, and about the war in the Pacific, that could not be addressed in the TV series. It is well worth buying if you are interested in the subject matter.
Highly readable account of one marine's wartime experience of bootcamp, troopships and the campaigns and landings against the Japanese on Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester and Pelelieu. Not quite the same level or amount of military action detail here as in Eugene Sledge's comparable book ("With the Old Breed") but includes plenty of compelling human commentary on officers and men of the Marine Corps and vivid descriptions of recreation leave taken in Melbourne, Australia (termed by Leckie as "The Great Debauch"). The illustrations in my paperback (line drawings and maps) were of poor quality but its the text that counts.
