Inevitable toning. Cover is clean with only some spotting to the top edges which do not touch the gold stamp. A personal and visual interpretation of an ancient ritual by a distinguished contemporary artist (Introduction). Shahn is inspired by his own childhood memories, his time spent with the Jews of the island of Djerba off the Tunisian coast and his own mature artistic vision. Text in Hebrew and English with substantial English Introduction and historical note by Cecil Roth on the significance of the ritual in Jewish culture and history. An original and impressive work.

Little, Brown 1965 First Edition FPu(y) No dust jacket, light wear to bright white cloth with gilded lettering on front, back and spine. solid structure, Pen note neatly lettered inside front cover, in Hebrew and English. 133 pages. Some staining to cloth along edges and some wear to corners.
First trade edition of Shahn's now-legendary Haggadah, originally issued in a limited edition portfolio by the Trianon Press. The trade edition is itself a handsome production and not over-common. Quarto (30cm). Tan linen boards, stamped in gilt; original acetate dustjacket (unprinted); xx, 130pp; illus. Ben Shahn's own file copy, unsigned but with estate label tipped on to front pastedown. Two brief nicks to the acetate protector, bit of browning to margins of text; still an attractive, Near Fine copy.
