American "luminist" paintings, to be distinguished from European Impressionism, are notable for a having a certain structure and a prevailing tone governing each picture. In the third quarter of the nineteenth century some of the most beautiful and compelling of all American paintings were executed in a style now called luminism, for its depiction of the radiant effects of light and atmosphere. In her essay, Novak writes, "that there are few pure luminist artists. But there are pure luminist works." Black and white photographs for Luminist paintings? Not a help. The very few color plates are way off in regard to color. A book this ambitious and with a good text deserves much better. I would welcome a new, more colorful edition.
