Everyone who is interested in hostory is always looking for reference choice that is not overwhelming in size and detail. The sixth edition fulfills that need . The present volume 1 covers the History of the United States from 1900 to 1945. Previous edtions of this work, for example the 4th edition, was composed of three volumes- volume I: The Progressive Era and the First World War 1900-1920, volume II: The Age of Franklin D. Roosevelt 1921-1945, and volume III The Era of the Cold War 1946-1973. The addition of William A. Link to the authorship beside Arthur S. Link and William B. Catton adds additional strength and eminence to this text. It is amazing how these authors pack so much into 388 pages and have it read so smoothly. Their discussion of the prodomata to both the First and Second Worls wars is excellent, not only spelling out the factual front facade, but in addition, the many interactions and ruminations of the principal actors in these monumental scenes. In a few words, for instance, they spell out the nuances of the Yalta conference, giving credit were due and pointing out short commings where appropriate. Each section is beautifully structured and written. This book is probably one of the few that can used as reference volume as well as a enjoyable reading.
