Ho-hum tale of 17th-century acting troupe

by Nomdeplume on Jul 19, 2007

The story of THE GLORIOUS ONES, ostensibly the tale of a commedia dell'arte troupe in 17th century Italy, is related chapter by chapter by different members of the troupe. While this method offers a variety of perspectives about the lives and fortunes of the troupe, the stories the characters offer are not particularly compelling. Nor do the multiple viewpoints add a greater, more complete dimension to the tale. Perhaps it's not a fair comparison, but David Mitchell's GHOSTWRITTEN and CLOUD ATLAS are far more riveting examples of novels whose perspectives shift from chapter to chapter, gathering momentum and increasing each book's impact.
