From the New York Times bestselling author of "The Prize" and "The Secret" comes an exquisite tender tale of love, adventure and passion! In feudal England, Elizabeth Montwright barely escaped the massacre that destroyed her family and exiled her from her ancestral castle. Bent on revenge, disguised as a peasant, she rode again through the fortress gates... to seek aid from Geoffrey Berkley, the powerful baron who had routed the murderers. He heard her pleas, resisted her demands, and vowed to seduce his beautiful subject. Yet as Elizabeth fought the warrior's caresses, love flamed for this gallant man who must soon champion her cause... and capture her spirited heart!
She is a noblewoman who passes as a peasant to save the Lord's life. She does so to protect her family land and also her little brother. He becomes quickly aware of who she is and takes on her battle to try to prove her story true. While doing so, he has set a plan of action going, but he cannot tell her what it is. Instead, he demands loyalty and patience. Neither of which she can seem to muster with success. While she is loyal to him, she also made a promise to avenge her family PRIOR to her promise to let him handle all. In her conflicted mind, she is not sure which promise to keep. She disobeys him on occasion and he tries to show her the way of it without giving too much away. He is another warrior with weird ideas about marriage and women. She tries to go along. When it seems all is lost and she will not get revenge from her husband, she makes a plan of her own. While on the way, she finds it better to let him do his duty as he sees fit and decides to turn back and remain loyal to her husband. He catches her on her way back. They face off and arguments ensue - they are set upon by rebels and she performs acts of lifesaving skill that leave them in a worse married state from her point of view. He is filled with fear for her life, she feels he is filled with rage of betrayal. They come to a silent understanding and decide to leave for his major holding, leaving her brother in her grandfather's hands for a year until he can come to them. Along the way she finds herself pregnant but they are called to court to face the king on a charge of treason by her uncle against her grandfather. This is the final act where she must show her loyalty and trust and save one or both her husband and/or grandfather as fortold in a dream. Good book.
