"In the Beginning"

by AnnieLou on Apr 27, 2007

Beginning with Hemingway's maternal grandfather, a corporal in the Civil war, this biography encompassses his early upbringing as the only male among several siblings, adored by his Mother and doted upon by his physician father. His early work experience as a cub reporter on the "Kansas City Star" in Kansas City, Missouri, influenced him to a determinant degree for the rest of his life.. The lessons he learned there about writing honestly and briefly and accurately, were to influence him the rest of his life. The experience of being wounded, while a volunteer ambulance driver in WW I, in Italy, resulted in a love affair with his American nurse there, oftentimes referred to as one of the main characters in one of his earliest books "A Farewell to Arms", a highly successful semi autobiographical novel sought out by Hollywood for picturedom. His later marriage to "Hadley"' the mother of his son "Jack", who writes the foreword to this book, prooves to be successful for several years in post war Paris. There he becomes acquainted with "the lost generation", as coined by Gertrude Stein :and thrives on the stimulation of such authors as Sherwood Anderson, Ford Maddox Ford, Ezra Pound and James Joyce, mostly ex patriots from England and America. This wonderful book by Peter Grifin, was intended to be the first of three volumes dedicated to Hemingway's full biography. I eagerly await the next two ! It is enriched by many early photographs of Ernest, his family and friends. You will really enjoy this one !
