Fort Smith was repeatedly abandoned and reoccupied for fifty years, until it became known as the Belle Point Phoenix, the fort the "refused to die." It was originally built to stop a war between teh Osags and the CHerokees, then served as a supply depot for the Choctaws, army base in the "White Lightnin' Wars, " supply depot for Confederates, then Union base, then the Federal Court for Western District of Arkansas moved in, where it served as a base for law and order in Indian Territory.
