White Fox (from Song of the Rock) and his teenage son Red Horse consent to guide Captain Le Fever, a Frenchman, up the Missouri river to open trade with the mandans and other tribes who live on the river. Captain Le Fever has been commissioned to open a trade route and to go to Sante Fe in hopes of opening trade with the Spanish. However, the captain doesn't tell White Fox about the second part of his quest--he still isn't trusting anyone with the idea about the Spanish. Red Horse is seeing girls now as other than just friends, and gets a hard lesson of life.. There is also a black slave that is part of Captain Le Fever's group. White Fox and Red Horse have never seen a black man, and have a hard time understanding "a slave for life".Then there is Baptiste DuBois who is a trouble maker and then a murderer. Mix this all together and you have a good story with a surprise ending.
