This book by Rumer Godden is another example of her excellent writing skills. Though it cannot compare to "In This House of Brede', Mrs Godden has a thorough understanding of her subject matter. Redeeming story with an end that is outstanding.

This novel, based on a true story, is a wonderful look at the mercy of God and how one can overcome nearly anything to go forward in life. Souer Marie Lise was a prostitute, a murderess, a brothel's madam, abused and ill-treated, and finally a prison inmate. While in prison, with the visits by the Sisters of Bethany (Souers de Bethanie) over the years to her prison, she very slowly found a new Lise and a new life. Yes, it takes place many years ago, but the essence is still vibrant and alive today as the Sisters continue to reach out to and help marginal, seemingly hopeless lives - and many times the miracle of a new life as a Sister, with her past virtually anonymous (except to the Superiors). This book utilizes many flashbacks, as a movie would when there's rememberances. This book gives one hope against hope, sees mercy and justice overcome fear and dispair.
