Bound in red paper covered boards, backed in brown cloth, titled in gilt to the spine. Two previous owners names to front free endpaper, one hand written and dated 1993, the other an ex-libris stamp in green. The text block is clean and tight but pages xvii-6 have a vertical crease. The dust jacket is worn and with small nicks to the edges and extremities, half-inch tear to top edge of front panel plus a shorter one, nicks to top and bottom of front joint, small loss of quarter-inch to bottom of rear joint, vertical crease to rear panel, half-inch tear to top of rear flap-fold. An excellent history of the struggle for power in Central Asia, from the early days of the Mongol horde who spread like a tide of molten lava, through the Victorian era of Kipling and Kim's Great Game and the rivalry between Russia and the British Empire, to the modern Game, still with Russia and Britain as contestants but with the addition of America. Originally published by John Murray, UK in 1990.
