Jeanne Guyon's has played a major part in the lives of more famous Christians than perhaps any other Christian book. Here is the very first edition written in modern English.Hide synopsis

I said no because I would recommend the original writing "Short & easy method of prayer" rather than this modern version of it. Altough the language is more accessible to today's reader and the flow of reading easier to follow, I consider that it deviates from the original intent of the author. The "original" English version can be found online under the title mentioned above. I strongly disagree with the previous review and I marked it as inappropriate. His (her) phrase "Ms. Guyon teaches people to resign themselves to the circumstances rather than having faith in God" is totally wrong. This person probably did not read her autobiography and how God brought her victorious thru many extreme circumstances or plainly doesn't get it. This person doesn't understand that Madame Guyon- one of the greatest saints of all times and one of the very few persons I know, read or heard of to reach a state of full surrender to God's will and leading of the Holy Spirit- teaches to surrender to God's will in circumstances, not to the circumstances themselves. The way she dealt with life's crisis (and she had an abundance of them), proves exactly her teaching. Sometimes we are placed in uncomfortable or bad situations and simply don't know what to do or how to get out of them. The way real faith is manifested in those situations is by placing our full trust in however God would deal with that situation and patiently waiting for Him to take the initiative and show us what to do next. Sometimes we don't have to do nothing, God will just remove that circumstance in his good time as we have the right attitude of faith and patience in the midst of our trial. This person's use of Scriptures, far from proving Madame Guyon's doctrine wrong, it strenghtens it. This person says "She then develops her ideas and addresses the reader as though the Holy Spirit was not in them leading them to all truth as Jesus tells us in John 14:25". Dear believer, look around you at the Christianity of our century and notice how many Christians live without the leading of the Holy Spirit. God appointed this person thru her example of life and thru her writings to guide and place Christians in a position where they would understand and follow the leading of the Spirit, not to take the place of the Holy Spirit.
"Experiencing the Depths of Jesus Christ" by Jeanne Guyon, is not an expository on scripture but rather is of the school of thought that one should accept the circumstances, good or evil as God's will. She has no understanding of Romans 8:28 and the believer's participation by faith. Hebrews 11 tells us that without faith it is impossible to please God. Hebrews11:1 "NOW FAITH is the assurance (the confirmation, the title deed) of the things [we] hope for, being the proof of things [we] do not see and the conviction of their reality [faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses]," and Hebrews 11:6 "But without faith it is impossible to please and be satisfactory to Him. For whoever would come near to God must [necessarily] believe that God exists and that He is the rewarder of those who earnestly and diligently seek Him [out]." Note God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. This correlates to Numbers 21:9 where looking upon the bronze serpent brought relief, the type of Jesus being raised on the cross as our substitute for sin. Notice the kind of look we are to have Numbers 21:9 "And Moses made a serpent of bronze and put it on a pole, and if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked to the serpent of bronze [attentively, expectantly, with a steady and absorbing gaze], he lived." Through Jesus we come out from under the dominion of Satan. Our faith gives us the victory in trials. Job found this out when Satan afflicted him. Though he didn't have the knowledge of Jesus Christ, he still believed in the goodness of God and overcame the trial by faith in God. He prayed for those who did not submit to God rather than succumbing to the trial.
Ms. Guyon teaches people to resign themselves to the circumstances rather than having faith in God. She subordinates the scriptures to her beliefs. Deut 28 tells us blessings and curses come on people according to their obedience or disobedience to God. The individual has control over their circumstances by obedience to God and faith in the power of God through Jesus Christ. John 14:26 (NASB) "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you." One can be led astray by reading subjective opinions rather than Bible expository. Jesus has redeemed us from the curse of the law Gal. 3:13 and we have the blessings of Abraham by faith.
Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon Me, because He has anointed Me [the Anointed One, the Messiah] to preach the good news (the Gospel) to the poor; He has sent Me to announce release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to send forth as delivered those who are oppressed [who are downtrodden, bruised, crushed, and broken down by calamity],
Hebrews 4:12 "For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart."
In John 10:10 Jesus says: "The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows)."
The author uses good scripture at the beginning of chapters but does not develop the theme; she injects subjective opinions revealing that her opinion is not based on scripture. She then develops her ideas and addresses the reader as though the Holy Spirit was not in them leading them to all truth as Jesus tells us in John 14:25
"I'm telling you these things while I'm still living with you. The Friend, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send at my request, will make everything plain to you. He will remind you of all the things I have told you. I'm leaving you well and whole. That's my parting gift to you. Peace. I don't leave you the way you're used to being left?feeling abandoned, bereft. So don't be upset. Don't be distraught." John 14:25
