This is number 81 in the famous BRITAIN IN PICTURES series edited by W. J. Turner. This set, which eventually numbered over 140 individual titles, was started early in the Second World War as a morale-booster for the English people. Many famous English writers and experts (Vita Sackville-West, George Orwell, Edith Sitwell, John Betjeman, Rebecca West, Dylan Thomas, Graham Greene etc. ) contributed their efforts. The set proved so popular that many individual numbers were reprinted and eventually a second edition was issued.
