Very Good. Limited Edition. 9" x 11.5" Signed and Inscribed by the Author This is a copy of the playscript's "first state", consisting of 76 bound 8.5 x 11 typewritten pages. It is signed and inscribed to Albee's lifetime friend Noel Farrand (see Mel Gussow's excellent Albee biography for a thorough overview of the Albee-Farrand friendship). The inscription reads: "For my Noel-Clairevitch [They often addressed each other using Russian-style patronymics. ], who will find here a bit of Chekov, a bit of Thurber, & a larger dose of his Edward NYC 1991". Marriage Play was commissioned by Vienna's English Theatre, Ltd., where it premiered on May 17, 1987. Neither this premiere nor the first US production (February 1992 at the McCarter theatre in Princeton, New Jersey) made a strong impression, and the play has not seen many subsequent productions. (Its UK premiere did not take place until 2001, at the National Theatre in London. ) The Dramatists Play Service Edition was formally published in 1987, with this typescript preceding it by about a year. (I don't know if there were any pre-publication revisions. ) The work is in two acts, its two characters being husband and wife, their marriage unravelling-to say the least. 75 pages. CONDITION: a bright, clean, uncreased copy, unmarked but for the inked title-page inscription, its cover showing bumped spine ends and lightly worn/frayed top and bottom edges. This unique, highly collectible copy is now in a clear, protective polypropylene bag with archival backing board. NOTE: Proceeds from the sale of this playscript will go toward the promotion of modern American classical music-particularly that of Noel Farrand.
