Teddy Roosevelt is the 'main character' of this work, however, other individuals receive a little more than cursory treatment. Some of these are individuals we have heard about before e.g. Elihu Root, Henry Cabot Lodge, George Dewey. Others are not often mentioned in history books e.g. George Frisbie Hoar. Minor characters, e.g. some average soldiers receive a few paragraphs of background.
The first half of the book covers the lead up to the Spanish-American War and parts of the conflict. After the war was 'won' there was another little war, the Philippine Insurrection, which is where the US revealed that it was not as righteous as it proclaimed itself to be. Domestic politics was intermingled with military politics. Some actions were not revealed in complete detail. Rosy pictures were painted at the highest level when the truth was dramatically different.
Fortunately for Roosevelt's political career, other issues came to the fore and people generally forgot about the Philippine Insurrection.
