The Boy Behind the Hatchet

by SeldomSeen on Jan 19, 2008

Our family is a big fan of Paulsen?s Hatchet series and his other vivid novels for children. His outdoor adventures ring with authenticity and his writing is crisp and spare. When I saw this autobiography at a garage sale, I had to buy it. Though "Eastern Sun, Winter Moon" reads like one of his young adult novels, the subject matter is not for kids. He chronicles his bizarre childhood during WWII in unflinching terms. His alcoholic parents, his mother?s promiscuity, brushes with pedophiles, sex with his Filipina maid at the age of seven, watching people die in airplane crashes and typhoons? At times, it strains credulity. If these episodes are in fact true, Mr. Paulsen was one severely scarred young man and puts a whole new light on his loner, survivalist stories. A must-read if you?re a Paulsen fan.
