While Sir Max Hastings' book views WWII from a strategic perspective, he also delves into individual stories from all sides. He quotes diaries, correspondence, and logs to bring a unique perspective to the war. We read about it from the viewpoints of the soldiers and civilians caught up on all sides. Many are tales of heroism, some of cowardice or incompetence, and many more express despair and futility. He doesn't concentrate on chest-thumping tales of fighter pilots, naval engagements, or armored movements, though he also includes those. (It would be rather difficult to relate WWII without them.) But the emphasis is on individual reactions to the conflict. A great read for the WWII history buff.
