This is a Very Good Copy of this Book in publisher's original orange illustrated boards with red title lettering to the upper cover and lettered in gilt to spine. This copy comes with it's very scarce and original dust-jacket and which is graded Good. The wrapper has approx 2'' of loss to the tail of spine with miniscule nicks to the head of spine and to corners of the wrapper, with one red ink mark to the upper cover and with about 3 closed tears to the extremities of the wrapper. priced at 3/6 to centre of spine. The inner flap is not clipped and has advertisement for recent six shilling novels. The light pinkish tone of the d/j has faded a little and is most noticeable to spine. This copy has NO previous names or inscriptions present. The book has a firm binding with no hinge weakness and there is no leaning or rolling to spine. The contents of the book are nice and clean. Zola was convicted of libel and after his internationally covered trial sentenced to a year long jail term but fled to England. He returned to France when the charge against him was dismissed. Dreyfus was exhonerated and regained full honours with the military. Back in France Zola continued writing, including his Les Quatre Évangiles (Four Gospels); Fécondité (Fruitfulness) (1900), Work or Travail (Labor) (1901), Vérité (Truth) (1903), and Justice (unfinished). Émile Zola died on 29 September 1902 at his home in Paris under what some claim to be suspicious circumstances of carbon monoxide poisoning by stopping up his chimney.
