Dodd took his family with him, including his daughter Martha. Initially enamored with the Nazi party and its passion, Martha supported the Third Reich. However, when Hitler's violent policies became apparent, Martha changed her opinion and watched in horror. Here, author Erik Larson offers a chilling first-person account of Germany's transformation under Hitler's rule.Hide synopsis

Larson relates the facts about the William Dodd experience, and in doing so reveals some of the quotidian horrors of the Reich and the political horrors of the diplomatic services.
He gives this history a life with faces and flesh.
Life in the pre-World War II, 1930s American embassy in Germany is revealed, The book gives a close-up view of William Dodd and his family as they arrive, settle in, and finally leave Germany. The family's struggle to understand what was happening around them as Hitler consolidated his power is compellingly written. Like other evil geniuses, Hitler was a master at deception and manipulation -- fooling the Dodd's was child's play. There are lessons to be learned from this insightful book.
This book came just as advertised,it was in absolute perfect condition-brand new. It is also a a marvelous read about the experiences of the newly appointed American ambassador to Hitler's New Germany beginning in 1933. His name was William Dodd, a simple, decent, and honest man. Perhaps he was too decent for the job of ambassador, or maybe he was just what the job needed....Maurice H Bank
