Akron OH, M. Walter Dunne/St. Dunstan Society, copyright 1901, hardcover, 366 pp, Edition Des Ambassadeurs; Court of the Stuarts Vol. II, Secret Histories of Royalty, Fair condition, no dustjacket, Vol II only, containing the years 1665-1706. Straight, tight and clean with no markings, some spine-end, corner and board-edge wear, gilt top edge tarnished, text block edges darkened with age. English writer, gardener and diarist whose memoirs are largely contemporaneous with those of the other noted diarist of the time, Samuel Pepys, and cast considerable light on the art, culture and politics of the time. He witnessed the deaths of Charles I and Oliver Cromwell, the last Great Plague of London, and the Great Fire of London in 1666. Illustrated with two tissue-guarded portraits; one of the Duke of Buckingham and the other of a not-quite fully-clad Nell Gwynne. Biographical Introduction by the Editor and a Special Introduction by Richard Garnett, LL.D. of the British Museum.
This diary is a wonderful historical glimpse into the times after the Tudors, and during the time of Samuel Pepys. It cast an interesting look into how politics has not changed with time, and how people of all situations dealt with life and death, the great fire of London, and other daily occurances. Very interesting read,
