delightful and informative

I would give this book 5 stars but the author uses the words 'basic 'and 'basically' far too often. It is still a great read. On Vashon Island, near Seattle, having 'never seen a farm up close', he turned several acres into a farm that included dairy cows, bees, chickens, sheep and goats, an orchard and more. He describes all phases of the operation (including butchering) in enough detail for the reader to decide if they would like to try it. The chapter on beekeeping is charming, the chapters on chickens and butchering less so. He made cheese from the milk, vinegar from the apples. He discusses the reasons he decided to stop selling raw milk, (No, no one ever got sick on his products) but one of his reasons was surprising. He also ran a 'one night a week' restaurant, serving products from the farm. He had some help but Timmermeister is clearly not afraid of hard work! On top of all this, he found time to write a very enjoyable book.
