About this title: Fighting in the dense forests of eastern Poland and Belorussia, Jewish partisans represented a heroic form of resistance in the midst of the Holocaust. Written by a Holocaust survivor, this study offers a riveting history of this remarkable group and its struggle to survive - and even to create a miniature forest village - in the midst of adversity. "I have read a number of books recording details of the Holocaust - some factual accounts, some fictional stories: but none has moved me as much as Nechama Tec's portrayal of the group who moved for safety into the forests of Belorussia - one by one, as they managed to flee the murderous assaults of the Nazis - under the main guidance of Tuvia Bielski and his brothers.
Because Tec is an academic, her book is as factually accurate as is possible for a process which has had to be recalled after the event. It was not possible to keep daily records under the conditions in which they were living. The one academic who did make a full survey of the survivors had all his papers confiscated and destroyed by the Russians after the end of the war. Tec has collected details from individual interviews with all those of the participants of the Bielski group she could meet, after the end of the war.
Her bare factual account of the building up of the group, and its gradual growth - including eventually the creation of organised working areas in the camp, for cooking, leatherwork, woodwork and so on - would seem to be incredible if we did not know that this actually happened.
You may have seen and approved the film, Defiance: but to get the precise details of this brave stand against the Nazis, and their Belorussian followers, you must read the book."
"Amazing story... told not so amazingly. I love survivor stories so I was totally excited about reading this... Like the other comments here, it was dry. There was a lot of repetition that just made it sort of confusing. I couldn't finish it. The movie was great though, but the book just didn't do it justice. I gave it 4 stars for being a good try. I'm glad someone wrote about Tuvia and what he did. I just wish it had been written with more feeling."
"A compelling story that needed to be told. I did find the writing a bit repetitive, but it was worth wading through the book. I knew nothing about the partisans or the Bielski otriad, and this book was an excellent history of them. It was inspiring for me to read about Jews who fought back against the Nazis and antisemitism. All I ever heard about in Hebrew school was how Jews were victims, not about how some of them fought back to survive."
"Another book I read after reading the movie. This book was very dry and somewhat hindered by a cast of supporting characters who became very difficult to recall when reading about them tens of pages apart in the text. A glossary of characters would have been helpful. The book seems to be an academic exercise, as it is heavily footnoted and consists of multiple personal interviews with survivors of the Bielski partisans. The work that Tec put into this book was astounding and Tec is to be complimented on this effort. Plus the story of the Bielski partisans is worth telling. The movie took the usual liberties with the facts while keeping the core of the story intact. Of course this distresses me because more people will watch the movie than read the book, and eventually the movie will become "fact" to people. Plus the handsome and beautiful people are always chosen to play the roles of ordinary-looking people only reinforces the pressure of this culture to conform physically to arbitrary ideals of beauty. The worst example is Renee Zellweger depicting Beatrix Potter, but I digress from the book at hand. If you read this book, prepare for something of a slog. Or read it if you have insomnia."
