Welcome to Alderley, a magnificent English mansion in the heart of the West Country where a grand house party is taking place. The preparations have all been made, the guests have been invited, and the staff are on hand to tend to the merest whim of the noble host and hostess. What could possibly go wrong? Let the entertainment begin...The theft of the diamond necklace and the antique pistols might all be explained, but the body in the lake - that really was a puzzle. 'Don't expect me to solve anything,' Inspector Wilkens announced modestly when he arrived to sort out the unpleasantness. And at a gathering that included English aristocracy, foreign agents in disguise, a ravishing baroness, a daring jewel thief, a Texas millionaire and, of course, the imperturbable butler, it was going to take some intricate sleuthing to uncover who killed whom and why. A delightfully quirky murder mystery, "The Affair of the Bloodstained Egg Cosy" will be a delectable feast for all whodunit fans.

Agatha C. would approve of the setting and the plot of this charming mystery set at the country house party with the various characters that are never who they seem to be. I did figure out who the murderer was before the last chapter but I enjoyed the book anyway, especially the night when the murder was committed: nearly everyone in the house party was in the halls or on the stairs in the dark rushing around stealing guns, putting them back, using a secret passage, killing other guests, wounding the detective, and in general causing mayhem without anyone being seen. It takes real talent to write that scene and keep track of everything and everybody. Wonderfully entertaining!

great read = surprise ending
I really enjoyed this book. It's a take off on the old fashioned who dunit! Great fun, good mystery and lots of laughs. Would love to see a tv series on the characters. I like a cozy and this is a cozy with a good mystery. I'm sick of so many tough, gritty, real life, etc. stuff. It was nice to enjoy the characters and just enough description to let you use your imagination. Did not expect the solution - and I love to be surprised. Most mysteries you know who did it by the second chapter. This was a surprise to me, but I liked the way it was worked out.
