Enquiring Pilots want to know!

by larryg on Sep 27, 2007

Barnes McCormick's book on Aerodynamics speaks two Engineering languages --- English System and Metric System. There is an advantage to this dual System approach. Sooner or later, we will all be aware of theneed to conserve energy. It is our fate that we will be flying Electric powered airplanes because of their promise of greater efficiency compared to petroleum fueled aircraft. Fuel cells, better batteries, will couple with high efficiency electric motors to give better performance than is available with conventional power plants. The facility gained with thinking about power propulsion systems in terms of kilowatt-hours consumed is vital to be able to make intelligent decisions about future choices. This book is an introductory college level text and explains some of the most complex topics in design and operation of aircraft. Anyone with an Engineering background will be able to read and understand the science behind propeller and Jet propelled aircraft. Some chapters are hard reads. Some familiarity with calculus is required. It is a good reference. For reference, I am an Instrument Rated Private Pilot and I have a BSEE and an MBA. I have no formal training in aeronautics other than Pilot training. I do like to know the technical reasons why things work. I am a retired VP of Engineering.
