Damned in Details

by Rory C on Apr 19, 2012

While this book in engaging, I am continually pulled out of my suspension of disbelief of this simi-fictional story which takes place in 1932 when the author, Max Allan Collins, makes such glaring mistakes such as when he states that an ex-feance had met another woman on the Queen Mary -- which didn't launch until 1936! Collins over reliance on parentheses to add details within sentences is clunky and gets rather irritating after just a few pages. He does begin to get into the period jive but too often "jumps the shark" by pushing the hero detective's lingo to a glaring cliche. Hammett, Cain and Chandler are cringing in their coffins!
