The book based on three lectures delivered at the New York Public Library, 1992 by Australian-born Robert Hughes. A brilliant, witty, and sometimes mocking critique of what America has become since the Reagan years...a splintering into fragmented tribes (by race, gender, ethnicity, sexual preference, ...) in new found sensitivity. LAID-IN: (2) reviews of the book: The first by Alfred Kazin (New York Review of Books, April 22, 1993), and the second by Henry Louis Gates, Jr (New Yorker, April 19th, 1993). Matched in wit, Gates wonders if Hughes did not unknowingly lodge "...a book length complaint about a complaint", and Kazin is reminded of what Chekov once said to his fellow Russians, "You live badly, my friends. Is it really necessary for you to live so badly? " Fine copy of a provocative book.
this is an excellent book by the most cogent critic today and is his trenchant arguments and outlooks on today's culture establishment and politics. a must read for anyone who would seek to clarify their grasp of where we stand as a country .
