Lot to be learned still from Walt Whitman

by DrVon on Mar 13, 2011

When my late wife was dying she asked for only one book. Walt Whitman's complete poems. Somehow the book was lost at the hospital and I replaced it by finding a used "The Complete Poetry and Prose of Walt Whitman." I only got Volume Two:Prose. I hadn't read much of Whitman's prose and was delighted. This is materially a well constructed book for a bibliophile who is also a reader, there is no car in our garage, only 4000 plus books! At 76 years WW's small essay THE MILLION DEAD, TOO, SUMM'D UP p. 75 changed forever my view of Lincoln without Walt ever mentioning his name. "In some of the cemeteries nearly ALL the dead are unknown. At Salisbury, N.C., the known are only 85, while the unknown are 12,027, and 11,700 of these are buried in trenches.... what visible, material monument can every fittingly commemorate that spot?"
