'A terrific novelist ...He could make most readers lose sleep all night and call in sick the next day' San Francisco Chronicle THE ICONIC BESTSELLER AS YOU'VE NEVER SEEN HIM BEFORE An irresistible tale of swashbuckling pirates in the New World; a classic story of treasure and betrayal Jamaica in 1665 is a rough outpost of the English crown, a minor colony holding out against the vast supremacy of the Spanish empire. Port Royal, Jamaica's capital, a cut-throat town of taverns, grog shops, and bawdy houses, is devoid of London's luxuries; life here can end swiftly with dysentery or a dagger in your back. But for Captain Charles Hunter it is a life that can also lead to riches, if he abides by the island's code. In the name of His Majesty King Charles II of England, gold in Spanish hands is gold for the taking. Word in port is that the Spanish treasure galleon El Trinidad, fresh from New Spain, is stalled in nearby Matanceros harbour awaiting repairs. With the help of his cunning crew, Hunter hijacks El Trinidad and escapes the deadly clutches of its commander, the blood-swilling Cazalla, leaving plenty of carnage in his wake. But his troubles have just begun ...' A master' Los Angeles Times 'Crichton writes superbly ...the excitement rises with each page' Chicago Tribune

This is the first of Michael Crichton?s books that I?ve read, and I loved it! Any fan of pirates will and must read this good, fast-paced, high energy and full of myth coming true, Caribbean adventure.
Captain Hunter, sponsored by the Governor Almont, is going to pirate the El Trinidad from the impenetrable Spanish fortress of Matanceros. The Cassandra is crewed by few, but curiousingly enough members. Hunter is forced to steal from under the greatly feared Cazalla, escape the chase of Spanish pirates, and manage to return to Port Royal with his neck and treasure in one piece.
The ending of this heroic tale was not what I was expecting but overall, I will look forward to reading this book again and again.
Publishers Weekly, 2010-01-25 In Crichton's posthumously published novel, Capt. Charles Hunter leads a lovable gang of pirates in a raid on a Spanish ship loaded with gold off the coast of Jamaica. Hunter's determination must contend with a host of rapacious cannibals, hurricanes, sea monsters, simmering mutiny, and capture by sadistic Spaniards. Crichton draws on every pirate cliche in the book, refreshing and reanimating them with heady atmosphere, crackling dialogue, and an endearing hero-all of which are brought to life by John Bedford Lloyd, who excels at accents and colorful personalities. Lloyd's deep and controlled voice projects energy and excitement, and steers clear of caricature. A Harper hardcover. (Dec.) Copyright 2010 Reed Business Information.
