The search for justice - and revenge - pits Hack against hired guns, drug dealers who operate on both sides of the border, and a psychotic killer known as The Preacher. Being a slow methodical reader "Rain Gods" was a time consumer. Burkes vocabulary is cause to keep a dictionary handy. An interwoven plot, the chapter switch's encompass a full cast of characters. Contemporary southwest Texas is graphically depicted, with all its neglect and dried out ambience. The characters are complete with detailed background and psychological composites. Pete & Vikki immutably ensnared in the grim execution of 9 Thai women and girls, who were victims of a prostitution and drug smuggling operation gone bad. Nick Dolan a New Orleans transplant who owns and operates a "Gentlemens club, combination restaurant" struggles for sanity and redemption, among a profusion of criminals and desperados. "Preacher" a phycopathic serial killer who proves very elusive, and is not without his own set of values and scruples. Law enforcement encompasses- Ethan Riser a "bigger picture" orientated FBI agent, Isaac Clawson a solo ICE agent bent on wide retribution for the immolation of his daughter and her fiance, and the main character Hackberry Holland local sheriff and a former prisoner in Paks palace during the Korean war, former ACLU advocate, who also struggles with many demons and flashbacks, but has attained some peace of mind with the passing years, and Pam his more than dutiful deputy. Mix it all up, you got a great and enjoyable read.
