But mostly it is the story of Ayla, the girl they found and raised, who was not like them. To the Clan, her fair looks make her different-ugly. And she has odd ways: she laughs, she cries, she has the ability to speak. But even more, she struggles to be true to herself and, with her advanced intelligence, is curious about the world around her. Although Ayla is clearly a member of the Others, she is nurtured by her adoptive parents, befriended by members of the Clan, and gradually accepted into the family circle. But there are those who would cast her out for her strange, threatening ways. So the conflict between the ancient Clan, bound by heredity to its traditions, and the girl in its midst, of a newer breed destined to alter the face of the earth, could never be resolved. And it is this same struggle that leads Ayla to venture where no Clan woman has ever before dared. Driven by destiny and the will to survive, Ayla breaks the forbidden taboo...With its exquisite detail of a world that truly might have been, The Clan of the Cave Bear is filled with awesome mystery and magic and infused with the drama of human survival. For it is a remarkable epic of one woman's odyssey in that crucial moment of evolution when two races, locked in a death grip, battle for their very existence. *****MY SHIPPING PLEDGE ***** Orders placed by 4pm CST will be shipped same day. Fast paced interesting read
Interesting combination of story line with enough drama and adventure to keep you reading interspersed with information on how humans survived before modern times. The author provided interpretation of events that I appreciated because I might not have come to the same understanding without it.

First in a series
First in a series of novels that follow the life of a child orphaned during the Ice Age. The description of societal rules, vegetation, climate changes, and animals has been well researched by this author. You will be transported back in time to experience archeology.

I read Clan of the Cave Bear and started on the "journey" several years ago. Our niece is now 13, and we bought this for her for Christmas to start her on the "journey." It is extremely well-written and well-researched. Jean Auel is superb in making her characters real. You feel like you're a part of them and have known them all your life. We will keep our niece on the "journey" with each of the Earth Children books. Can't wait until a new one comes out. I keep watching the web for any news. I strongly recommend this book for everyone!

Vivid Journey to Prehistory
Upon reading the first chapter, I fell in love with the descriptions of the land, animals, and the characters of this book. I was hooked from the beginning and destined to buy not only all 5 books in series, but have read and reread them as well. Jean Auel, allows you to see the shortcomings of the moral fiber of humankind as well as the strengths. She has researched and allowed the reader to imagine the beginnings of the uses of many of the things we take for granted as always being there. She also allows us to experience the fear and appreciate the courage of the hearty People called "Clan" as Ayla a human child learns to live among them. Great read! But buyer beware, you will find this one hard to put down,
