This title is the UK debut of the fastest rising star in American crime writing. It is a must read for fans of Linwood Barclay and Harlan Coben. After years of trying for a child, Jack and Melissa McGuane have finally adopted a baby girl, but nine months later a call from the adoption agency plunges them into a nightmare that will force them to take the law into their own hands as they fight to keep their family together. The child's biological father - an 18-year-old boy - never signed away his parental rights, and now he wants their daughter back. It is immediately obvious that the boy has no real interest in the child, his own father is forcing his hand. But why? The law can't protect Jack and Melissa. The boy's father is a well connected federal judge: their attorney won't touch the case, Jack's job is suddenly and inexplicably under threat. On the other side of the law, the boy is connected with Sureno13 - a powerful and dangerous street gang. Together, father and son wage a harrowing campaign aimed at destroying Jack and Melissa's hapless family. The only person on their side is a disgraced, 'dirty' cop...The question is, how far is Jack prepared to go to protect his family?
Publishers Weekly, 2008-11-17 Bestseller Box (Blue Heaven) explores an adoptive parent's worst nightmare in this compelling stand-alone thriller. Jack McGuane, an employee of Denver's convention and visitors bureau, and his wife suddenly discover that demonic Garrett Morland, the birth father of their dearly loved nine-month-old daughter, Angelina, didn't sign away his parental rights. Garrett and his powerful father, a sitting federal judge, give the McGuanes three weeks to return Angelina. In this bleak scenario, Box eschews facile sentimentality and meticulously builds pitch-perfect characterizations, notably that of McGuane, who grew up with uneducated but hard-working parents on a series of Montana ranches. Box's equally convincing villains-gangsters, murderers, child pornographers-each provide a different face of evil, and each individual has to decide how best to get at the truth. As usual, Box blessedly reasserts that whatever the cost, such truth exists, and ordinary folk have the strength to find it. Author tour. (Jan.) Copyright 2008 Reed Business Information.
Publishers Weekly, 2009-03-02 In this stand-alone thriller set in Denver, Jack and Melissa McGuane stand to lose their adoptive baby daughter to her birth father, a teenage psychopath who never relinquished his paternal rights, and his father, a ruthless, well-connected federal judge. John Bedford Lloyd creates unique voices for every character and fully inhabits the role of narrator Jack, whose naOvete leads him to make appallingly stupid decisions. Lloyd makes Jack believable and sympathetic and prevents listeners from losing patience with his inability to realize just how dangerous his enemies are. The final CD concludes with a 3-minute interview of author C.J. Box. A St. Martin's/Minotaur hardcover (Reviews, Nov. 17). (Jan.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved
