MARVELS as iconic storytelling

by MarkFBraun on Jun 8, 2010

I have an inside interest to the saga of Phil Sheldon as he witnesses, through several personal setbacks in his life, the renewed faith in idealism with the emergence of superheroes. I am, in truth, Phil Sheldon, at least alex Ross's Phil. The tale began by Ross (and a nod to NOSTALGIA DIGEST's Steve Darnall) before Busiek cut his teeth on fleshing out the concept. This series was Alex Ross as an emerging talent: Taking each decade in mind with the painter's style and carefully researched details, it is an award-winning saga, written and painted with great respect and love of the medium and its mythology. The faces are real people we know; other artists, actors, and icons in their own right (Del Close of Second City as Doc Ock). Read it and then delve into the back stories of the tale for even more surprises (Phil's kids are my real-life daughters who actually became scribes and newsies like their fictional father). Any fan of Marvel comics, from WWII through the 80s, will thrill at the exacting retelling of their greatest moments as seen through the eye of a common family man. It may be the singular classic of its kind alongside LOVE & ROCKETS and MAUS.
