Detective Cassie Maddox is still trying to deal with the events of In the Woods. She is out of the Murder Squad and has started a relationship with fellow detective Sam O'Neill but is too badly shaken to commit to Sam or to her career. Then Sam is allocated a new case, that of a young woman stabbed to death just outside Dublin. He calls Cassie to the murder scene and she finds the victim is strangely familiar. In fact, she is Cassie's double. Not only that, but her ID says she is Lexie Madison the identity Cassie used, years ago, as an undercover detective. With no leads, no suspects and no clues, Cassie's old undercover boss spots the opportunity of a lifetime: to send Cassie undercover in the dead girl's place. She could pick up information the police would never hear and tempt the killer to finish the job. So Cassie moves into Whitethorn House, poses as a post-grad student, and prepares to enter Lexie's world.

Tana French's characters are psychologically complex, so memorable that I kept thinking of them days after I finished the book.
As an actress and director as well as writer, her scenes are so vivid, the reader feels right there. Further, there are many twists and new insights; nothing is simple or pat.
The Likeness builds on her first murder mystery, Into the Woods, and I'd recommend people read that first.
I read both novels, 400 plus pages each in 24 hours, simply couldn't stop reading for long.
I recommend her as a real find.

Is she or isn't she
I found Tana French's prose, and exceptional story telling remarkable. Anyone who loves mysteries, will find it hard to outguess this one.
Cassie Maddox is called to the scene of a murder. But the victim could be her twin. She agrees to go undercover, in order to smoke out the killer.
When Cassie becomes so enmeshed in her undercover job,her boss begins to wonder if she has crossed the line of no return, all the while allowing her to take more and more risks. Even those who knew her best appear to have no clue. Or do they?
As the story escalates and we begin to wonder if Cassie can hold it together, a few people become suspicious and the noose around Cassie's neck tightens. Who will crack first, Cassie or the killer.
But Cassie wants to hang on, as do we, to figure out exactly who did do it.
Having read this book before French's first novel which debuted Cassie, I found a few comments referring back to the original a bit confusing, but not enough to deter from the story.
This is an amazing read.
Publishers Weekly, 2008-05-19 Edgar-winner French blurs the boundaries between victim and cop, memory and fantasy, in this stunning sequel to her debut, In the Woods. Det. Cassie Maddox, a dead ringer for Lexie Madison, whose body has been found on the outskirts of the Irish village of Glenskehy, agrees to masquerade as Lexie in a police effort to identify her murderer. Cassie journeys to Whitethorn House, the rambling mansion Lexie shared with four fellow Ph.D. students and tells the friends that she survived the attack. As she probes deeper into the close-knit group, Cassie finds herself becoming emotionally attached to the stoic Daniel, sensitive Justin, gadabout Rafe and dependable Abby. But as tensions rise in the house and in Glenskehy, Cassie must decide if the biggest threat comes from without or lurks within. French cleverly subverts the conventions of the locked room mystery, ratcheting up the tension at every turn with her multidimensional characters. Readers looking for a new name in psychological suspense need look no further than this powerful new Irish voice. (July) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved
