Good. No Dust Jacket. Size: Small 8vo 7; First edition of scarce first book by William Dean Howells. Clean brown textured cloth binding with title and wreath decoration embossed in gold on front cover; same decoration on back cover but embossed in blind; top edge gilt. Professionally rebacked, with new head-and tailpieces and new endpapers. Covers are very lightly scuffed. Two of the book's leaves (pp. 35-36 and 99-100) have been replaced with four leaves that are printed on whiter and shinier paper than the rest, that are printed on one side of the leaf only, and that are bound in blank back facing blank back. Fore and bottom page block edges are darkened, and margins of original pages are just starting to darken. There is the first name of a former owner in ink on the title page, and there are a few penciled marginal notes. Laid in is a bookplate reading "The Howells Edition/Indiana University"--apparently this copy served as part of the reference collection for the project that prepared the Indiana University Selected Works of W. D. Howells.
