An Exceptional Account of a Little Known Era

by Marcus W R on Feb 23, 2012

A couple of years ago, I read Willocks' "The Religion" and didn't know a thing about the siege of Malta but enjoyed the book. Crowley's "Empires of the Sea" not only ties a ribbon around the earlier fictional story but is actually more exciting and a more awe-inspiring story than a fiction if it were to be composed about that entire 60-year period. Crowley does a masterful job of coloring the times so a reader understands civilization during the 1500s, relaying the horrors of the time, displaying both the heroes and villains in almost Cecil B deMille fashion. In an effort of providing our monthly book club a report, there was almost no way to convey the depth of research and understanding the author has, let alone his ability to tell the story, to the attendees. If a Hollywood producer worth his salt were to pick up this volume (as well as Crowley's other works) he could well give the "Star Wars" epic tales a run. I look forward to Crowley's next work.

Excellent book. It summarizes the whole pol˝itical context of its Century. I was looking for the history of Lepanto and found a huge idea of the problems between Europe ant the Otoman Empire
