Retired Professor of Linguistics Desmond Bates is going deaf. It's a bother for his wife who has an enviably successful new career and is too busy to be endlessly repeating herself. in my opinion this was not a good read...some parts were really good but they were far and few in between...most of the book was boring and drawn out way too long...a lot of unnecessary story...i liked the idea and concept of the novel...and i did think of how crazy the characters situation was...but could have done without...peace
