Well-Researched, Scholarly

This is primarily the story of Herman Perry, an army combat engineer who shot an officer in the China Burma India theatre during WWII, fled into the jungle, and was eventually captured, tried, sentenced and hanged. Brendan Koerner explains who Herman Perry was, why he was drafted, how he ended up in the China Burma India theatre working on the Burma Road and why the road was an ill-conceived idea at best. In addition, this is a story about race and segregation in the Army, something our soldiers in Irag and Afghanistan haven't experienced and may not even know about. It is well-written and extensively researched. But, it is best read in small doses because there is a lot to absorb here.
