Shimmering

by Ellyb on Apr 7, 2009

Claire Keegan's collection of short stories about Irish life is like a quick, brilliant flash of light. The stories are short but almost brutally efficient in exposing the inner, delicate core of their characters within just a few pages. Each story moved incredibly quickly, and the collection as a whole is quite slim, but the enormous depth of emotion and pure human energy contained within needs no more length than what Keegan gave it. Her work with imagery is also exquisite, and some passages practically shimmered in my mind's eye. What an incredible talent. I'm going to look out for her previous collection as well as any still to come.
