This volume is unusual in that addiction is addressed from a psychodynamic perspective rather than the traditional medical or disease model approach. This is a review of the author's work of thirty years. He has selected representative writings from this thirty-year span that both instruct the reader on various points about substance use disorders and elucidate his own theoretical development in the field. For example, he is a major proponent of the idea that substance abuse is a form of self-medication for underlying disorders or deficits. In this volume the reader not only gains knowledge of what self-medication is but also sees how the author develops the idea over time as his own experience evolves. The author indicates that the book is intended for students, clinicians, and patients and their families. While the writing style is crisp and clear, the material is at times so complex that it is difficult to imagine laypersons truly grasping it. The book is offered in six parts.
