Beautiful Illustrations, high-quality recording

by Cenicienta on Mar 21, 2008

This beautiful Caballo Alado series of hardcover books with accompanying CD recordings was just what we were looking for for our bilingual children. In fact, it exceeded our expectations. English is all around our daughters every day, but we want their Spanish vocabulary and literacy to be just as strong. We constantly look for high-quality books and media in Spanish, preferably not translations. This series is nicer than anything we have purchased in either language. The books were so reasonably priced that their sleek hardcovers and beautiful layouts were a pleasant surprise. Each story is illustrated by a different artist, all with colorful, unique styles that enhance the stories. Print is large and clear for beginning readers, and the text is simple and direct. The lively audio recordings feature multiple actors and excellent sound quality, complete with tasteful music and sound effects. They follow the text exactly except for a few bits of dialogue. There's a nice balance of humor and seriousness, just right for fairy tales. The actors have (Castillian) Spanish accents, but the language is accessible to Spanish-speakers from any country. It's even helped me improve my own vocabulary! Different books are geared at different aged children. The yellow ones, subtitled "Al trote", are aimed at ages 3-5. The red ones, subtitled "Al galope", at ages 7-9. We bought one of each, and our precocious toddler enjoys them both. The main difference is in the number of words per page. The red ones make for a longer audio recording, useful for putting kids to sleep. We've read and listened to these stories over and over in the past month, and eagerly await the publication of new titles this spring.
