About this title: This story, set in the south of Spain just after the Spanish Civil War, is based on the childhood memories of the author's husband. An eight-year-old boy named Curro leaves school to go to work as a swineherd for some wealthy landowners to help earn money to support his family. Starving, Curro begins eating the acorn-like "bellotas" that are fed to the pigs--thereby putting his life at risk because everything he eats is considered the property of the landowners.
