Stanton Evans presents an outstanding investigation into the nature of Joe McCarthy and the opposition that has been ranged against him. The disappearance of archival material related to this period at multiple locations, and specifically that containing McCarthy's assertions, should be a wake-up call to any dispassionate investigator of the McCarthy era, be that person of left or right. The enigma of Joseph McCarthy, his short political career of lasting impact, and his death at an extraordinary young age of 48 in 1957, unequivocally recommends that those researching the McCarthy period obtain a copy of Evans' thorough and informative text.

Eye Opening Look at History
Having lived five decades with the image of Joe McCarthy as a red-baiting publicity seeking monger, I was led to search for a better version of the truth after delving into several other facets of the Roosevelt-Truman era of our history.
I purchased this book based on other reviews and could not have been more pleased with its contents. Although heavy into minute details in some chapters, the book unravels much of the McCarthy lore and provides strong documented evidence of how Joe McCarthy was essentially smeared by the government entities who did not want his hard-driving investigative efforts to expose their lackluster monitoring of the growing Communist influence in our Federal government in the late 40's and early 50's. Just as important as the facts that are quoted are the numerous cases of congressional records that just mysteriously vanished when they would have otherwise vindicated a vilified McCarthy.
This book is a must read to anyone who desires to move from the realm of conspiracy theory to real life government manipulation of our Congressional system and how it has been used to shape foreign and domestic policy while protecting the reputations of a series of political hacks.
My hats off to Stanton Evans for a terrific look back at one of the most influential times in our history.

It's about time
Having viewed a talk on C-Span, given by Professor Evans in Washington D.C. last November, I decided this book would make a perfect Christmas gift for one of my sons. My suspicions are always aroused when any person, rather than answering a direct question in a simple and forthright manner, attacks instead the character of the questioner, in other words, the 'ad hominem argument.' As I hold to the belief that a man is known by his enemies, I have felt for years that there really had to be something at the bottom of the continuing attacks on Senator McCarthy long, long after his death. This factual, well documented book has been far too long in coming. Professor Evans done a first-rate job of exposing the mountain of deliberate lies, misrepresentations, personal attacks that have been too long held as 'doctrine.' It is excellent reading and a wake-up call to anyone who still believes these tired old lies. His attackers ought to 'pull their own noses.'
