Very Good. Book Hardbound volume with cloth covered spine and paper covered boards, with 72 of the 79 listed plates. Joseph Pennell (July 4, 1857 April 23, 1926) was an American artist and author. Pennell was born in Philadelphia, and first studied there, but like his compatriot and friend, James McNeill Whistler, he afterwards went to Europe and made his home in London. He produced numerous books (many of them in collaboration with his wife, Elizabeth Robins Pennell), but his chief distinction is as an original etcher and lithographer, and notably as an illustrator. Their close acquaintance with Whistler led the Pennells to undertake a biography of that artist in 1906, and, after some litigation with his executrix on the right to use his letters, the book was published in 1908. This volume contains works by artists such as Goya, Whistler, Toulouse-Lautrec and many more. Condition: The binding is slightly loose with both covers and all pages attached. There is some wear to the extremities including rubbing to the boards, bumping to the corners and top and tail of the spine, and some discoloration to the boards. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with the occasional handling mark. There is an ink inscription to the front blank endpaper and a few pencil markings to the rear duplicate preface. The plates have not been bound into the volume according to the index, but form a separate unpaginated section at the end. Some of the plates are missing. Overall the volume is in fair condition.
Illustrated by Illustrated. Fair with no dust jacket. MISSING all seven original lithographs, spine taped, library stamps/marks/labels/pocket, half-title page loose but present, some gutter weakness, a few foxed pages, edgeworn, wear. Still serviceable reading copy of this oversize hardcover.; Plate on front paste-down: "This Copy is No 90 of a Special Edition for America." Profusely illustrated. A talented illustrator who was a friend and biographer of Whistler, Joseph Pennell mastered lithography and, with his author-wife Elizabeth Robins Pennell, wrote this authoritative work on the subject as part of the struggle to legitimate lithography as fine art. It was only in the same year as publication, 1898, that the Paris Salon allowed color lithography in the exhibition. Despite the lack of the seven lithographs, this is an acceptable reading copy of the Pennells' pioneering advocacy for fine art lithography.; Ex-Library; xiii, 279 pages.
