Anne Rice's compulsively readable novel is arguably the most celebrated work of vampire fiction since Bram Stoker's Dracula was published in 1897. As the Washington Post said on its first publication, it is a 'thrilling, strikingly original work of the imagination ...sometimes horrible, sometimes beautiful, always unforgettable'.Hide synopsis

Inscribed and dated in the year of publication by the author to photographer Jim Marshall on the the front flyleaf: "For Jim Marshall, / a great photographer, / with special affection, / Anne Rice / April, 1976." Responsible for some of the most iconic images in rock and roll, including Jimi Hendrix setting his guitar on fire at Monterey Pop and Johnny Cash flipping the bird at San Quentin, Marshall, who passed away in March of 2010, was a legend and star in his own right, one who's work has become an indelible part of music history. Near Fine in a Near Fine jacket. The gold foil jacket is just lightly rubbed overall, else very bright without any fading or tears. On its own, an exceptional copy of a book and jacket usually found worse for wear, made all the more interesting by the association with a important photographer. Near Fine in Near Fine. dust jacket.
Description:Fine dust jacket. Her acclaimed first book, the first in the...Fine dust jacket. Her acclaimed first book, the first in the Vampire Lestat series, and one of the unlikeliest success stories of any publishing season. Modest hardcover sales of the book would not have led one to imagine the long-term popularity and success of Rice's later books in the Vampire Lestat series, nor did they predict the huge success this novel had in paperback, selling millions of copies; it has been estimated that Rice has sold more than a hundred million copies of her books over the years, and this title has gone through several successive collectible editions. Even so, Rice's novels did not begin to approach such sales again until her second vampire novel, which was published after two mainstream historical novels. Rice's vampire novels have been unprecedented bestsellers as well as being critically acclaimed, and even her erotic novels of sado-masochism have achieved a kind of mainstream success that defies prediction. This was the basis for a well-received movie in 1994, directed by Neil Jordan and starring Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise, among others. Rice abandoned the vampire genre in 2004, in a prominently announced return to her Roman Catholic faith. This is the scarcest of the books, particularly in nice condition, as the gold foil dust jacket is notoriously prone to wear. Fine in a fine dust jacket, and scarce thus.

A lovely copy of the author's first book, and the first entry in her Vampire Chronicles. Basis for the Neil Jordan film with Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Antonio Banderas, Stephen Rea, Christian Slater, and 12 year-old Kirsten Dunst in her breakthrough role. A widely influential book, as seen by the cottage-industry of vampiric anti-heroes which generally follows the themes and characterizations created by Rice (vampire-angst, vampires who only bite bad guys, vampires who love puppies, etc.).

Fine in a near fine dust jacket. A very bright copy. Anne Rice's first novel is a "seminal modern vampire novel" but also a "profoundly modern exploration of human sexuality, religious beliefs and personal philosophies¿ Rice's interweaving of fiction and historical fact and atmospheric rendering of New Orleans as a city where the living and undead mingle are particularly powerful¿ [Her] Vampire Chronicles are landmarks of modern horror fiction almost single-handedly responsible for the phenomenal popularity of the vampire story at the end of the 20th century" (Barron, Fantasy and Horror 303).

There was too much time inside Louis's melancholy mind and not enough about the world at large. I preferred The Vampire Lestat because it had a more active narration as opposed to the lament always present in this book.
That said, still well-written.
This book will absolutely suck you in and you'll never want to put it down (except to read the other books in the series). Anne Rice's amazing use of detail paints a perfect picture in your mind and its like your actually there. You'll fall in love with the handsome vampire Louis as he tells his "life" story to a young, at first unbelieveing reporter. You'll also meet many other interesting characters such as my favorite Lestat (whom you may not like at first but keep reading the books and loving him is inevitable) and the child vampire Claudia. I promis you, you wont regret buying this book, and odds are you'll read it more than once!
Anne Rice spins such an intricate story in this book. You are quickly sucked into Louis' world and the thought of leaving it is almost unbearable. There are some points where Anne goes into so much detail that it becomes a little bit of a dry read, but those details are essential to this intricate story. I fell in love with Louis and felt so sorry for him. I fell in love with Lestat, yet hated him so much. I would have to say this is my absolute favorite book. I have read it dozens of times and can't wait to read it again.
