Light and Amusing

by Svetlana on Jun 9, 2007

For a novel about grief and widowhood, this is a surprisingly light and amusing read. Narrator Sophie Stanton is blindsided scarcely three years into her marriage when she loses her husband to cancer. Only 36 years old, she has no idea how to cope with this. Winston takes us from Sophie?s sluggish depression and minor breakdown to her move to another town, job change, and, eventually, first dates since her husband died. This brings on a spate of humor, e.g. "Nine of the fifteen pounds I want to lose cling to me like an overprotective mother who doesn?t want me to take my pants off until I?m married again." The way her career change works out comes off a mite too smoothly to be believable, but Sophie?s relationship as a Big Sister to a troubled 13 year-old girl makes up for that and adds a lot of depth to the story. The devastating grief of her initial loss is never downplayed, but somehow isn?t overwhelming thanks to Sophie?s self-deprecating humor.
