American history comes alive

by Louis David T on Dec 2, 2010

Deeply moving and continuously fascinating story that focuses on a single momentous battle at Gettysburg over a few days in the Summer of 1863. It is not only skillfully written but is full of details that bring to life the experiences of common soldiers, both Union and Confederate, right up to Generals like Lee, Longstreet and Meade. Chapters written from the point of view of various officers never failed to hold my attention. Overall, I finished this book with the sense that I had a new appreciation of the American Civil War.

Killer Angels puts you in the driver's seat at the battle of Gettysburg, moving among the generals and brigade commanders and across the fields where 45,000 soldiers died in two days of battle. Shaara conveys the essential characters of men like Lee and Longstreet. The battle comes alive, bringing the reader into the action as no nonfictional account could do. First rate storytelling in an historical context.

I bought the series after reading two books by the same author on the Revolutionary War. All were great! Truly historical novels that provide a very interesting insight into the history of the USA. Great product - Great price
