For philosophically minded Isabel Dalhousie, editor of the Review of Applied Ethics, getting through life with a clear conscience requires careful thought. And with the arrival of baby Charlie, not to mention a passionate relationship with his father Jamie, fourteen years her junior, Isabel enters deeper and rougher waters. Superb Read

This book, like its predecessors, had me reading late into the night, hungry for McCall Smith's wonderful observations on life and its meanings. Like the other books before it, The Careful Use of Compliments is brilliant and sparkling not because of a thrilling plot or dynamic characters but because of its wealth of poignant observations that constantly had me nodding my head in agreement. Isobel's realization of her blessed life, her struggle between giving Jamie his freedom and holding onto him jealously, her questions about her own right to be wealthy and her obligations to use that wealth for others...I gave up trying to save all of the quotes from the book that touched my heart - there were so many that I might as well quote the entire book! Although I read several critiques of the book that disparage it for the lack of vitality in the relationship between Jamie and Isobel and for the less-than-thrilling mystery plot, I have to argue that those things are NOT the main focus of the book. If you want an exciting read or a thrilling mystery, look elsewhere. But if you want a heart-warming, philosophical book that will send your mind thinking in a million different directions and will remind you of all the many ethical issues that we deal with each day and will force you to evaluate your own actions in light of the truths it highlights, then this book is for you. It's a book with a brain and a heart and it does not disappoint!
