These purposes could include: to support the legitimate medical use of controlled substances; to facilitate and encourage the identification, intervention with and treatment of individuals addicted to prescription drugs; to identify and prevent drug diversion; to provide assistance to those investigating cases of diversion or other misuse; and to inform the public, including health care professionals and policy makers, of use and abuse trends related to prescription drugs ( for more information regarding the possible missions of State prescription monitoring programs, please see Prescription Monitoring Work Group of the Na-tional Alliance for Model State Drug Laws: Recommendations for State Prescription Monitoring Programs, submitted with this testimony ). The data collected in the monitoring system is not ' ' new ' ' information - in other words, information that was previously unavailable to those investigating diversion cases.
