In 1555 this company, in which, as a society of capitalists, the premium system would have appeared in its earliest days, passed a rule forbidding the brethren to take money or other goods with their apprentices by any way of covenant4 Unfortunately there is very little information as to premiums in the sixteenth century, and even in the seventeenth the obscurity surrounding them is not completely lifted.
