I do not see why they should make a difference. Mr. Heeoy. That is cast polished plaiu glass. The word was intended to describe the highest state of polish. Senator Aldeioh. Which is the higher duty, 46 per cent, ad valorem or specific? I mean for glass of that size. Mr. Hebov. Forty-five per cent, ad valorem is very much higher. The duties are for unsilvered 17 to 30 per cent, as against 45. That is a vast difference. Then take the duty next above. The specific duty is simply 8 per cent, as against 45. Of course the duty would be slightly more on account of the beveling--about the difference between increased cost of glass and the increased cost of beveling. Senator Aldbich. Can they make any colored glass in Germany they please, or are these colors the result of natural causes? Mr. Heeoy. They can make it any color they choose in Germany, provided they have the materials; but every manufacturer makes his own particular color; he uses his own ingredients, that produce different tones of color. Senator Aldbich. But if he found it to his interest or advantage to change the coloring he could do it without trouble? Mr. Heeoy. If it was his interest to change the color he could do ft. Senator Aldeioh. Then if they got all of their plate glass into this country free it would practically give them a monopoly of the market t Mr. Heboy.
